The Stiff Upper Lip Tour - 2013
Puerto Pollensa Veterans  v  Liverpool Ramblers

Pre match training started as always at El Posito on Friday 13th !! May have been the cause of a problem at midnight for Angus Whyte, as he was rushed to hospital with an undiagnosed pre match condition! But despite this he showed the true Ramblers spirit by showing up not only amazingly fresh for the match the next day but played very well in mid field.

The annual showpiece match between the Puerto Pollensa Veterans and the Liverpool Ramblers started this year with a minute silence observed by all for Gary Grey, a Rambler's player for over 20 years who passed away 6 months ago and will be sadly missed.

The whistle blew for a 6pm kick off.  After a very slow start,  the Liverpool Ramblers gradually took control of the game, driven by their captain, Paul McGuckin, making life difficult for the opposing team.  Stephen Lewis and John Morris had a couple of chances to put the Ramblers ahead but were held at bay by the Veterans.

After 22 minutes of play, the artificial pitch and the heat started to take its toll with both teams making substitutions. The most notable being Paco, the Puerto Pollensa Veterans manager and captain, who has now played his part in all 26 encounters and holds the record of the only player to do so.

The first half concluded with the Ramblers in control of the game but the score remaining at 0-0 owing to great play by the Veterans.

As there were no linesmen, we often saw Willy Hall, doing his best in the role running up and down shouting encouragement.

The second half started with a surprise substitution, Mike Bagley coming on for Chris Murphy. If there was ever an inspirational substitution at half time, this was it.  Mike Bagley, on the 51st minute, made his mark  by scoring his first ever goal for the Liverpool Ramblers. Being ahead for the first time in many years was not a surprise for many, as the team had been showing great apptitude in a fast moving game and having most of the possession.  The loudest cheering for the goal was led by three veterans of the Ramblers, Willy Hall, Miles Pickering and David Clarke, who showed more surprise than the goal scorer himself.

As the sun began to dip behind the goal posts, the game increased its pace, with a couple of balls being lost over the pitch netting, and on several occassions the Puerto Pollensa Veterans had excellent shots at goal. But the Rambler's back four, controlled superbly by Peter McNay, kept the Veterans at bay.

John Morris, at the 76th minute, showed promise with a strike at goal from a Ramblers corner but was well held by the Veterans keeper. The fast pace continued and on the 82nd minute, Stephen Lewis, one of last years goal heroes, saw himself with a good chance of scoring  but which unfortunately went wide of the mark.

By this stage, both sides were showing signs of fatigue, however the Puerto Pollensa Veterans put in a late spurt which the Ramblers were lucky to be able to contain until the final whistle.

At the end of 90 minutes, cheers from the crowd celebrated the Liverpool Ramblers winning result of 1-0, with both sides congratulating each other on a great game well played and well refereed.

In the post match interview, Nick Kennedy, the president of the Ramblers, whilst being delighted with the result, also informed me that this was only the 4th time out of the 26 encounters, that the Ramblers had won. Our super sub, Mike Bagley, during the interview, expressed how surprised he was to have been playing, let alone score, as he had only received the call to join the team 5 days before the match.

The crowd had loudly supported a great game, and along with the visiting team, all agreed that the Puerto Pollensa Veterans had yet again been terrific hosts for  this annual  event, and continued to do so with after match celebrations!
