Mary, this is fantastic (well, sort of). I feel a whole article coming on. Love to know what was behind the song. Was it just a song or was some influence applied?

Cant find anything relevant about this song at all.  No film connection or holiday etc etc.  Just one of those little "gems" you come across now and then!

I can't find who wrote THOSE words either!  ::)

Remember that programme where you can put things into a big black hole to be found thousands of years later?  :o

Now ,then, now, then, now, then Guys & Gals

She wrote it herself and it reached no 12 in the UK charts in 1955.

( Don't get me started on Jimmy Savile Jokes !! )

Hmm, controversial. Did Pet pen it herself? I'm saying she didn't. Tomorrow's blog will hold even more revelations (and none about Jimmy Savile).

Andrew,

Just got a gut feeling I'm terribly wrong on this one and can't wait for the DB tomorrow.

Do you remember Pet singing "the little shoe maker " on Children's Favourites on the wireless
( as we called it then ) ?

Check it out Bella ( theme just up your street )

We used to write to "Uncle Mac " then when the BBC had integrity , no chance of us getting fiddled with then !!

You'll have to wait till Wednesday for the DB disclosure, BL.

Uncle Mac. I wonder if he used to play "Nelly The Elephant" in the background.

He did indeed , Andrew.

And what about the Billy Goats Gruff !! Never got sick of hearing that story ( which we did nearly every week ) .

" I'm a Troll, oldy ole "

That's when a Troll was a one eyed monster and not some bloody nerd on the Internet.

Happy Days , eh ?

Loved that "Laughing Policeman " as well. Blame it all on Z cars who changed the face of the Bizzies !!

"The Little Shoemaker" is a popular song based on the French song, "Le petit cordonnnier," by Rudi Revil. The original French lyric was written by Francis Lemarque. The English language lyrics were written by Geoffrey Claremont Parsons, Nathan Korb (Francis Lemarque) and John Turner.

In the United States, the best-selling version was recorded by the Gaylords, charting in 1954. In the United Kingdom, the song was the first charted hit for Petula Clark the same year.

The recording by the Gaylords was released by Mercury Records as catalog number 70403. It first reached the Billboard magazine Best Seller chart on June 23, 1954 and lasted 19 weeks on the chart, peaking at #2.[1]

The Gay Lords , eh Bella?

Mmmmm like the sound of them !!

Are they the nice boys who wear pink Ermine and pretty tiaras?

 BL ;D

Ivor Biggun , he sang bawdry songs didn't he Andrew?

Check out "handling swollen goods " or some even worse which I will not repeat on these delicate pages.

If you recall Ivor Biggun was originally a Benny Hill character . Introduced always as "Ivor Biggun from Mill Hill " , corrected promptly by "that should have been Ivor Mill from Biggin Hill"

Got a larf every week !!

Oh those happy pre PC days, eh?

Coincidence. There is a Petula Clark at 80 years old documentary on Radio 2. On the iPlayer for four days more. A good and interesting listen: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b01nq4zd
