Read a bit more on this subject.

 Good and bad news.

The good is that the Russian Rocket launching the second new sattelite is running very late and not due to launch now until late Summer which means switch off could be Autumn at earliest.

The bad news is that both BBC and ITV want to significantly reduce their footprint ( i.e. coverage) on the new sattelite to protect their UK copyright and as we pay for the BBC can hardly blame them. This is planned for 2014 apparently.

So beware before investing on a new bigger dish later this year cos it may be redundant in under a year. Sounding like Internet is going to be the way to go on this ?

Incidentally the VPN I've set up on my iPad works a treat here and so SkySports , BBC and Itv players working a treat.

Don't fret Kev, still be into Bar Med to annoy the hell out of you all!

Just spotted this on Facebook.

Channel 5 & signal problems ?
We are in the north today due to high amount of calls from people losing channels in the evening. If you'd like us to fix this from just 45€ call us now,

Thanks Mary. I have seen a few adverts from various companies suddenly appear regarding tv problems. Have you experienced any problems yet?

Luckily I don't have TV problems as I don't have TV in my place only a large DVD player.   :)

I have several friends and neighbours who have already lost channels though.  Channel 5 seems to be very wobbly already for some people.

Think that will only be a temporary fix cos if you have lost/ are losing Channel 5 now expect to lose the lot when the new sattelite gets launched in the Autumn.

Let's hope the Russkies still haven't finished that rocket !!

I forgot to report back, but my slingbox is working well in Mallorca. I can see everything in Mallorca that I can on my Sky box in the UK, including stored films.

Only requirement is a broadband connection both ends. In Alcanada I only get 1.5 Mbps but that seems to be enough. I have a laptop connected to the TV via an HDMI lead and use a cordless  mouse and keyboard.

In the UK the Slingbox connects to the router with an ethernet cable. There is a separate cable which activates the remote sensor on the Sky box

Quite simple and no issue with dishes or footprint.

Thanks,

That's good to hear . Presumably you do need to have a pc from your sling box to your telly?

Wondering if you can get the right connections off an iPad ?

 Be much neater solution.

BL,

In the UK there is no need for a PC. The slingbox plugs straight into the router.

Ipad will work in Mallorca if you just want to view it there. Not sure how you would connect an Ipad to a TV though if you wanted to view on a TV screen.

The advantage of the laptop is that you can use a cordless mouse and so you can control it remotely

See that the Astra 2 e Satellite has been successfully launched into space . The move of tv channels from Astra 1 n is likely to take place once the satellite has been tested and put into it's position 28 degrees east. They say that this will occur prior to the year end and I have been told by Oct 30th.

Looking at the footprint again the new beam footprint looks highly concentrated over the UK so am not optimistic we will keep any BBC or ITV channels .

 Time will tell

I got the old Astrophysics textbooks out last night .

There is a chance, just a chance , that the problem could be solved by a sophisticated "earthing " system.

I wonder if any of our readers have any possible illustrations on how such a mechanism might work ???
