Airport car hire, and basic driving advice
« on: July 17, 2013, 10:25:19 AM »
A good site for checking the basics for driving in Mallorca, and a few links to various car hire companies reports.

After all is said and done, a lot more will be said than done!

The Police in Mallorca have posted on Facebook, listing the 5 main categories of fines they issue to motorists during the Summer.

5 summer fines
Speed. - As it could not be otherwise,  speeding is top of the ranking. It is one of the principal causes of death in the highway and despite the every time major presence of radars, the drivers do not seem to brake too much. In fact, 39 % circulates over the limits. The sanctions can come to 600 euros and the loss of 6 points of the card.
Alcohol and Drugs. - The summer also is synonymous of beer, holiday, alcohol and drugs. In the last campaign of control of the DGT, realized between 6 and June 12, 2. 283 drivers were fined for this reason. The sanctions change from 500 euros and four points up to 1. 000 euros and six points of the card.
Using a mobile phone. - To speak on the phone, to answer a whatsapp message, to consult the social networks or any other action that we might carry out with our mobile phone while we drive can be object of a sanction for 200 euros and three points of the card.
To drive barefoot,in  flip flops or without a T-shirt. - These three actions that can turn out to be intuitive in summer are punished by the law. Any of three violations of the regulation it is translated in 200 euros and retreat of three points of the card.
Poor vehicle Maintenance. - Lights, tyres, number plate not properly visible, expired ITV (MOT) ... they are some of the causes stipulated in the road code as punishable infractions with fines of 200 euros although without loss of points.

Thanks for that Mary, very interesting to see but be more interested to find out how much they get in total revenue from the fines !
That said, I find it is sometimes no pleasure to drive around in the summer due to the vast numbers of hire cars and in the spring, the vast numbers of cyclists. Last week we did not hire a car and relied on public transport and do you know, we got on just as well. OK, we were staying in the town as against a villa in the countryside but at this time of year perhaps a car is a luxury not a necessity.

Good idea Tonsyl! The bus service is really very good, isn't it?
Was glad to read earlier that the Transunion transfers were good too, especially as the Hoppa ones are so poorly run now.  :)

OK, one experience is not a certainty but Transunion did well and they certainly appear to have a good setup. We will definitely use them for our next visit.
