Why no foxes?
« on: October 03, 2011, 08:36:17 AM »
Something that has always amazed me is the total lack of foxes on the island. Why is this? There appear to  be no large preditor type animals around, or am I wrong? Here in the UK we are over run with them both in the country and in towns. Obviously there is no tunnel for them to get the the island, but with Mallorca being such a farm run island, what are their problems in this respect, it can't just be rabbits surely?  ???

Yes it is strange isn't it Bella! I wonder if perhaps they just haven't reached the island or maybe dislike the climate?
Also hedgehogs don't seem to have a home on the island either?

Ah, I have actually seen hedgehogs. When we were driving down the backroads in Santa Maria one evening, I saw one wandering along the edge of the road. I made hubby stop the car, go back, and put it inside the hedge!  He did use an old newspaper we had in the car, so I didn't have to fumigate him for fleas before he got back into the car!  ::)

Ahh that is so sweet!  ;D

Steve is really good as my dear hubby would just make me get out of the car and move it myself.
I do think I would have got the old disinfectant out just incase though Bella - any excuse!  ::)

Ok well we now know we have hedgehogs - so where are all the foxes?

No foxes as they've not been brought in. Except there was a case a couple of years ago when a fox was found dead on the Son Real finca near Can Picafort which had been "terrorising" whatever the local fauna is. It had clearly been brought in and let go. All a quirk of indigenous species I guess, I'm not aware of there being foxes on other Mediterranean islands either.

Thanks Andrew! Well now we know.
Actually thinking about it I suppose i does seem obvious that there needs to be an Adam and Eve! ::)

Can't think of why or how anyone would want to bring the flipping things over. We have so many here on the Essex Coast and they are a real pain. There are also quite tame too.

There has been much debate regarding the dog mess situation - we can REALLY do without flipping foxes too! ::)

And can you imagin the state of the roads when they work out how to turn the bins over!! :o So its just the wild boar that are the scavenger type animals on the island then. Glad they dont roam the streets at night!  :o

So that's why there are so many unscathed free-range chickens wandering around...

In Alcudia?! Really! Whereabouts? I have googled a few sites and read that they were not on the island at all - even at Sinbads! ::)
